AI Prompt Social App
At the start of 2023, we found ourselves talking to friends and constantly hearing the same thing: “ChatGPT is cool, but what do I use it for?”. Before OpenAI released the ChatGPT app, we built Smth.AI, as ‘prompt social’ app for discovering prompts. Our goal was to make AI simple and fun by showing users clear affordances.
We split the app into two key parts:
Prompt community
A place for users to explore, share and use prompts created by the community.
Chat interface
A straightforward interface for using prompts found in the community, creating a new prompt or generally exploring interactions with an LLM.
Exploration and Optimism were the central themes of the Smth brand. I used a single prompt style to generate all images within the application, and we used a Midjourney API to programmatically generate images for each new prompt a user added to the explore page.
The resulting AI-powered scheduling app offers a seamless user experience, allowing individuals and businesses to effortlessly manage their schedules.
Prompt Community
The home page of the app was the explore page, where users could browse prompts made by others, search by category, or find other users to follow. We gave it a friendly styling with lots of colour and vibrant images generated programmatically via our midjourney API.
Chat-to-Prompt
Most people don’t know how to construct a good prompt, so we allowed people to express what they wanted to achieve, and Smth would create a more verbose prompt that had better output.
Voice
We used Eleven Labs voice API to allow users to interact with the LLM via voice.
We found this to be pretty magical, especially when combined with a complex prompt taken from the Explore page. A few months later, OpenAI launched Voice in the ChatGPT App.
TestFlight
We released the app on TestFlight to a group of early users. We received a tonne of great feedback and insight for the next version of the app, but we decided to pivot to Comet.Computer.
Influencer partnerships
As we prepped for a full launch, we set up partnerships with prominent 'AI influencers'. Our initial launch received recognition in the AI community and resulted in 500+ sign ups.
Results
The app quickly gained traction among users but when OpenAI launched their ChatGPT app, we decided to pivot to something bigger where we thought we could have more impact.
